For that last 10 years I’ve been thinking about starting a blog. Really, anyone in the business of online marketing is almost expected to have a blog. But I’ve always worked for someone who had a blog and never really wanted to commit to maintaining a blog. So, I’ve finally decided to do it! Why? Well, several reasons:
- Build my personal brand
- Voice my opinion
- Educate myself
- Have fun
Build My Personal Brand
Sure I’ve got a Facebook, Twitter and a Google+. And I’ve even managed to build a small following. But I don’t own those. I’ve built those social media accounts mostly by sharing other people’s stuff. I feel like it’s time to create my own stuff! I have no interest in trying to compete with the SEO celebrities out there, but sometimes I might have something of value to add. To my non-geeky friends, it’s not going to be all about SEO. Although I don’t know where this will lead, I think I’m going to blog about working from home (it not all fun and games you know), being a dad at age 40-something, Montgomery County, Maryland (we need a conservative voice), the DMV area (DC, MD, VA for those of you not from around here) and of course the Mountaineers (win or loose).
Voice My Opinion
There are things people don’t know about me. I’ll admit I’m a little afraid of being myself and really saying what I feel. Especially about issues of religion and politics. I usually stay away from those topics on my social profiles. But here, I intend to be me! It’s ok to disagree with me. I’m a conservative. I’m a believer. And I live in Montgomery County, Maryland, one of the most liberal counties in the US. I believe the Holy Bible is the Word of God. I’m a minority where I live but I’m ok with that.
I was an online marketer before Google existed. But I don’t know everything. And though I work with designers, developers and engineers every day, I’ve never actually built and or maintained a website. Who knows, I might even learn to write a little code! Experimenting with my own site is not off limits. So, if you see something that looks a little goofy, maybe I’m just experimenting. If there’s a new SEO tool, tactic or theory, I’ll try it out here.
I hope this turns out to be a lot of fun. But I don’t have much free time. Perhaps blogging can be my release? We’ll see. I’m going to try to post once per week and not put too much pressure on myself. Sometimes I get so busy with my consulting that I don’t make time to do anything I just do for fun. My wife enjoys scrapbooking. I think I need something like that.
